WalkUp
side project liveA walkability score that actually works and explains the reasoning behind every score.
WalkUp takes a point on a map and tells you how walkable it is, 0 to 100, with a breakdown per category. The frame is the 15-minute city: how much of daily life (groceries, restaurants, transit, a gym, a park) is a short & comfortable (tree shade, non hilly walks) walk away.
I built it for myself first, so it can help me pick where I want to buy a home (2 babies makes you want to buy a home, lol). I tried existent walking score apps out there and they always came short when I tried them on places where I’ve lived. They ranked things in entirely different ways to how I would’ve based on my felt experience. They also almost never explained why they scored places the way they did. It felt like they just gave me a random number tbh.
Here’s a live report so you get the idea:

There’s more to do, like public transportation route integrations, weather integration and whatnot. And it’s not prod/commercially ready in my view. But the core of it is there and it’s been quite helpful for my needs.
I also presented it to a Denver realtor and he got it right away. Walk Score gives one vague number. WalkUp gives you details which are genuinely worth something. He said I might be able to whitelabel this to MLS systems… Maybe I’ll be an indie hacker after all.
